Ebooks Round Two! Ding! Strange Attractors!

I've just released Book Two of The Chaos Chronicles for free download. That'll be Strange Attractors, now on your cyber newsstand in html, Mobi, PDF, RTF, yadda, yadda, and yadda. With yadda formats soon to come. Seriously, with the help of the good ebook lovers of Mobileread.com, it'll be in about eight different formats within a few days, more than likely. Most of them are up now.

This, if you're just joining us, is part of the great windup to Sunborn coming out as a Tor hardcover at the end of October. I can also report here that all signs are Go for Sunborn to also appear as a Tor ebook at around the same time, or soon thereafter. (This represents a change in my arrangement with Tor, a change I agreed to with the understanding that it would appear in a timely fashion, and in a DRM-free form.)

So, I'm psyched.

Now that is way cool. But I have to wonder: just how does Tor plan to offer it? They've certainly gotten enough vocal criticism from folks unhappy with their freebie ebook program to promote the relaunched Tor.com offering the first books of several series as ebooks, but not the rest. pnh commented that Macmillan was busy converting the rest of their catalog, and more ebooks would be forthcoming, but didn't mention how folks would get them.

The last I knew, Tor wasn't really set up to sell directly to consumers. If they plan to sell it, who will be the vendor? Baen's Webscriptions? Someone else? And what formats do they plan to offer? I doubt they'll have the breadth of offerings you have for the earlier books. :)

Baen. I talked to both my editor and Baen's senior editor Jim Minz. Both assured me that the obstacles to Tor's selling through Baen have been removed, and we'll see Tor books being sold on Baen Webscriptions very soon.

As for the formats, I don't know.

Funny how these things go around. When I first knew Jim Minz, he was out in Wisconsin working as Jim Frenkel's assistant, just getting his start in publishing. He remembers the first three Chaos books partly because he helped handle the original contracts for them with Tor. He's a good guy, and I don't doubt a major asset to the Baen program.

Hello Mr. Carver and let me begin by saying that I absolutely love your work. I discovered your work through the Baen Free Library, from which I have read many good books. I would immediately go out and buy all your books but some of your earlier books are impossible to find here in Malaysia, so I appreciate being able to read your books online. Thank you, and keep up the good work. And I wonder if I will ever see a movie based on the Chaos books...? xD

Hi CCGuardian! I'm glad to hear that you found my books. One of the great things about this ebook program has been the number of people from all over the world who have found my books, who probably never would have otherwise. As you may have discovered by now, nearly all of my other books are now available as ebooks, some free, some pay, and most of them are right there at Baen Webscriptions. (Which I recommend over some of the other outlets in terms of how good a job they did with the conversions. Also DRM-free.)

I'd like to know if there'll ever be a Chaos movie, too. :)
